"White Student Union" (documentary)

A white student, Matthew Heimbach, creates a white student union at Towson University.

It's ridiculous, but not surprising, that this white supremacist mindset is still so prevalent in 2013. What do you think?

Is 'The Great Gatsby's' Great Secret That He's Actually A Black Man?

Is 'The Great Gatsby's' Great Secret That He's Actually A Black Man?:

This is to all the people who have a problem identifying with POC narratives. To all the people who cried when they found out Rue from the Hunger Games was of OC…Enjoy this extremely high possibility =]

I will now be reblogging all Miguel shade.

If someone who is of African American descent can't make a observational statement about his own people, then who can? Don't throw shade at him, he's telling the truth. Black people ARE insanely judgemental. We are the first to judge yet the last who want to be judge. In fact, just by saying you're gonna reblog all Miguel shade proves his point

Agreed

man, stfu…From everything we as a people have been through, all the racism and hatred and prejudice we're shown, how could we not be judgmental?

and the fact that anyone could make the assumption that "we're the most judgmental in the world" must not know shit about their heritage: Our history (and present) is built on the judgement of WHITE SOCIETY…gtfo

Slave gravesite in New York City

"SOMETHING YOUR TOUR GUIDE MIGHT NOT TELL YOU:

The heart of NYC's Financial District is built on a huge 18th century African Burial Ground. Some 419 Africans were discovered in 1991, a large portion women and children.

The burial ground extends from Broadway Southward under City Hall, and almost to the site of the former World Trade Center. It is believed that there are as many as 20,000 slavery-era Africans in graves under the buildings in Lower Manhattan.

Abolish historical amnesia and ponder for a moment the fact that this financial epicenter of the world is built on slavery, oppression, and death."

Literally, and daily.

theyre old enough to know right from wrong and this is just wrong and disgusting.

And this is why we hate you

Why I don't fucks with white people right here. THIS is why we don't let you into our spaces, you undercooked pile of salty grits.

Wow……

What's crazy is like… on one hand we gotta deal with overtly racist White people like this. Then on the other hand, we gotta deal with White people who think racism doesn't exist (unless the victim is a White person with their feelings hurt).

That's why I think that the majority of White people are sociopaths.

I don't think you people understand this pisses off white people too. Like there are white people who understand how ridiculous and disrespectful this is. Don't think every fucking "white" person's like this jfc.

If you're more concerned about your feelings and protecting your image as a white person, than you are about how angry and hurt this makes black people feel, then you clearly are not empathetic and you are not as anti-racist as you think. Scratch that, you're probably a racist.

^GUARANTEE YOU they didn't go on the youtube video and make any comments against the video or respond to the racist comments underneath it. But they feel it's perfectly fine for them to be up in my face crying "not all White people are like this."

Lack of empathy for victims of white supremacy.. a system that they support which creates the people in the video. Never responds to the facts.. only attacks the messenger. Sociopaths.

"Both women in the video, Rachel Cooper and Jessica Heid, responded to the video: "We were doing facials and it happened to have been a brown facial mask," Cooper said in an email. "We had to leave it on for 12 minutes. During that 12 minutes, we horribly decided to make a video that we regret and are not happy about. This was made over a year ago." Cooper continued her email in an apologetic manner. "I am saddened and sick to my stomach and sorry for anybody it offends. It was not mine or hers intention at all and we are embarrassed about it. We understand we cannot do anything about it now but apologize and inform people we did not paint our faces or put that on to purposely make a video. It was something that just happened after putting the facial cream on and we are so deeply sorry. This video does not define our true selves at all." Jessica Heid also replied to the video. "That video does not define who we are… it was accidental… we did not intend to hurt anyone with it."

and the fact that white people really believe that "apologies" can even exist for this type of INTENTIONAL bullshit is beyond me..

African American teen graduates as Valedictorian of her High school despite her battle with years of homelessness.

Check out the news story video above

Chelesa Fearce, a senior at Charles Drew High School, said she was homeless for most of her high school career, even living in her mother's car at times.

"I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore," Fearce said. "You're worried about your home life and then worried at school. Worry about being a little hungry sometimes, go hungry sometimes. You just have to deal with is. You eat what you can, when you can."

The family of five sometimes had an apartment, but those occasions were short-lived.

"Ended up back in another shelter because I got laid off from my job maybe about four or five times," Fearce's mother, Reenita Shephard said.

"I just did what I had to do," Fearce said.

Fearce achieved a 4.466 GPA and tested high enough to enroll in all college courses for her last two years of high school. When she enters Spelman in the fall, she will do so as a college junior.

Her SAT score of 1900 also made her a star student at Charles Drew.

Fearce's sister is graduating this year as salutatorian from George Washington Carver High School in Atlanta.

"I read to them a lot. Everything was a learning experience," Shephard said.

"Don't give up. Do what you have to do right now so that you can have the future that you want," Fearce said.

A Bronx bus company is offering tours billed as a "a ride through a real New York City 'GHETTO,'" the New York Post reports.

The company, Real Bronx Tours, has taken largely white foreign tourists around the Bronx. The tour guide was caught mocking the Bronx by Post reporter Candice Giove.

Three times a week, Real Bronx Tours takes riders — mainly white Europeans and Australians — on a trip that includes stops at food-pantry lines and a "pickpocket" park.

image

"Last week, on the first stop of the $45 tour, guide Lynn Battaglia, from Pittsburgh, pointed out a housing project. She then mocked the Grand Concourse, modeled after a Parisian boulevard," reports Giove."'Do you feel like we're on the Champs-Elysées?' she teased a couple from Paris."

The tour also included a drive near a food pantry at a church. Battaglia wondered out loud, "I don't know what that line's about, but every Wednesday we see it. We see them go in with empty carts, and we see them come out with carts full.

The tour guide warned of the dangers of going to a park in the Bronx and also gave inaccurate information about the origin of the word "pig" to describe a police officer. While Battaglia claimed the word came from the Bronx, in reality it originated in London.

The Bronx borough president harshly criticized the guide and the tour.

The guide is "the biggest fool on the planet," said Ruben Diaz, the borough president. "To have foreigners come and gawk at a long line of people who are less fortunate than they are and to make money off of that and to view them as they are some sort of entertainment is pretty disgusting." [emphasis mine]

This is a total diss to my hometown. Ugh the Bronx is many things, but there is beauty there…and I'm happy I spent a good chunk of my childhood there.

It's irritating to see these dumb ass tourists come to my city and mock it for their enjoyment and someone is getting paid to be a racist/classist asshole.

They're taking a tour of the projects like it's a zoo. Like it's a fucking exhibit. SMH.

Like, i know yall mad and shit but this aint no worse than what Americans do in other countries. In fact, we are notorious worldwide for this same kinda act happening in other countries. But i see yall wanna get offended when shit hits home right? Granted the tour guide sounds like an idiot, the whole concept isnt anything new and Americans are the biggest perpetrators.

can somebody please explain to me why I'm supposed to not hate the whites again?

The Black Panthers - Photographs by Stephen Shames

In 1966, as the largely nonviolent Civil Rights movement swept through America, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the legendary Black Panther Party in Oakland, California. Revered by some and vilified by others, the party burst onto the scene with a militant vision for social change and the empowerment of African-Americans. Its methods were so controversial and polarizing that in 1968, FBI head J. Edgar Hoover described the organization as the country's greatest threat to internal security.

During the height of the movement, from 1967 to 1973, photographer Stephen Shames had unprecedented access to the organization. He captured not only its public face—street demonstrations, protests and militant armed posturing—but also life behind the scenes, from private Party meetings to Bobby Seale at work on his Oakland mayoral campaign. Shames was prolific and his archive of Panther images is the largest in the world, presenting an uncommonly nuanced portrait of this dynamic social movement. Released on the occasion of the Party's fortieth anniversary, this illuminating publication gathers an astonishing collection of never-before-published images, offering an electrifying visual history. Panther newspapers, posters and other ephemera help convey the ethos of the Panthers and of a transformative period of social upheaval for the whole nation.

You know we could very well start this up again.

closet-racists like to claim that they'd be totally fine and dandy with traditionally white characters being portrayed by actors of color whilst they're casually dismissing the prevalence of white-washing in hollywood. hate to break it to you, but that is NOT the typical response that actors of color receive, and if you can't acknowledge that, then you're only adding to the problem.

remember that time hunger games fans flipped their shit because rue, who IS actually black in the books, was rightfully cast as black in the film? apparently their rose-colored white-is-default glasses made their eyes gloss over that tidbit of info. (let's not even get wholeheartedly into the fact that katniss was described as having olive skin and jet black hair but her casting call specifically asked for only white actresses…because non-whites could never be expected to have dark hair and tan skin amirite?!)

remember that time people actually boycotted thor because idris elba was in it? http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/12/16/racists-thor-idris-ebla-racism/

remember that time donald glover got hoards of letters calling him the n-word because there were rumors about him possibly being the new spiderman?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgko-xReFSs

or that time the film adaptation of avatar: the last airbender (a show with OBVIOUS asian inspiration) was almost an entirely caucasian cast except for the "bad guy", who, in the cartoon is actually light-skinned?                                      http://io9.com/5111680/avatar-casting-makes-fans-see-white

or remember that time all those fans said it was wrong to have angel coulby play the role of gwen in merlin because it wasn't era-appropriate. because, ya know, being era-appropriate in a made-up story about magic is srs bsns.

so that's why i don't give a shit if you think i'm "overreacting" about jj abrams having a white actor play khan noonien singh. i'm not that surprised by it, since actors of color are routinely dismissed, but i still reserve the right to be pissed.

Remember that time when executives said that they wouldn't fund a movie because it didn't have enough white people in it?

http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5i_e3UYOiNEhW03rcVTpcB2e15IMg

Remember the time when executives said that they wouldn't allow a show with a majority POC cast because "Black people don't see themselves in the future?" despite Geordi, Uhura, Sisko, Tuvok, Tyr, Zoe and so many other BLACK sci fi characters existing as past precedent?

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/07/12/black-people-dont-see-themselves-in-the-future/

Remember when it took 20 years to get a movie about Black people out because distributors BLATANTLY REFUSED TO PUT IN THE WORK TO PROPERLY ADVERTISE A BLACK MOVIE?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/10/george-lucas-hollywood-di_n_1197227.html

Remember when writers had  Batman choose a French/African representative in a comic book and people FLIPPED THEIR SHIT because how dare he choose a Black Muslim to represent FRANCE!!!!

http://www.racialicious.com/2010/12/27/bats-in-their-belfry-dc-comics-new-muslim-hero-angers-islamophobes/

But we're overreacting when we say we're tired of the bullshit that is systemically entrenched in damn near every form of media…..

Oh, ok….

This is totally disgusting.

Hip hop today.

And what's interesting is

They co-opted all of those things and are clawing at hip-Hop

Trying to make it their own

Don't forget Blues, R&B, Soul, etc.

And what I think is funny is American popular music BEGAN with minstrel songs… where Whites used to where Blackface and pretend to be Black.

So literally, American music at its birth was Whites poorly imitating Black people.

& then people wanna be like

"BUT HIP HOP AINT JUST ABOUT BLAAACK PEOPLE, ITS FOR EVERYONE!! HAHAHA"

Not so gentle reminder that without Black folks the US would have no musical legacy to speak of.

And yet, the "hip hop is global" rhetoric doesn't just cm from white people. A whole lot of brown & black folks want to erase black Americans from their own creations. And then complain about us touching anything from anywhere else. Black cool is a commodity that has value as long as it doesn't involve black American people.

Anti-Racism - Anti-War demonstration, 1967.

"Black women are not universally angry, because no group of human beings is universally angry. Black..."

"Black women are not universally angry, because no group of human beings is universally angry. Black women can be kind, warm, sensitive, gentle, thoughtful, and forgiving. Every day, millions of women of African descent around the world prove the accuracy of this statement, prove it quietly, with unseen gestures and whispered words as they go about the business of leading challenging, unobtrusive, but meaningful lives that rarely attract the glare of media spotlights or the sharp tongues of patronizing, preening, pundits. And yet, without the radical kindness of Black women on every continent of this planet, even more Black children would suffer before they had the chance to grow, even more of the elderly of all races would die alone and without care, even more Black women and, yes, more Black men - and more people of all races whose lives have been touched by the kinds of Black women you never see on television or read about in academic articles - would exist with less love, grace, and meaning in their lives. We speak here of RADICAL KINDNESS because Black women have every social, political, cultural, and historical reason to be relentlessly and perpetually unkind, in the interest of their own success and survival, to abandon kindness as an unwieldy and unrewarding burden that they cannot afford to carry. But carry it they do and distribute it with great, and greatly ignored, generosity."
